Description

At the end of 2012 the square on Brīvības Street next to the Russian Orthodox Church of the Holy Spirit was renovated. The square was given a new life with the sculpture "Horse with a carriage" by the sculptor Gaits Burvis and a well, where best wishes to the town of Jēkabpils from twenty-two representatives of local intellectuals have been engraved. A carousel made in harmony with the style of other environmental objects has also been placed there.
The square is situated on the historic Wednesday market place, where Duke Jacob proclaimed the foundation of the town on February 12, 1670. Active marketing took place there on Wednesdays, it was the oldest marketplace in Jēkabpils and the former historic centre of the town.
The reconstructed square has been created as a united sculptural location ensemble, conveying a message about the historic marketplace of Jēkabpils that was situated there several centuries ago. The square is a significant place in the town and welcomes every citizen and guest of Jēkabpils.
